Having read about a great post called 100 hard to find education apps I thought I’d share a few of the apps that I use on a daily basis.  Please let me know of any others that I’ve missed!

DropboxDropbox – A great piece of software that lets you sync your files between multiple computers (Windows / Mac / Linux) for free (although you can purchase extra space if you wish).  The app allows you to access all your files on your iPhone  and send links to other people for easy sharing.  If you wish to edit the file then you need my second recommendation – QuickOffice.
Note: This link will give you a free 250MB taking your free account upto 2.25GB: https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTE1NzgxMjk (Free)

QuickofficeQuickOffice – This word processor, spreadsheet and soon to be presentation software allows to to edit your files on Dropbox, MobileMe and other cloud based file systems.  Sitting on the train going to a course and need to write a letter?  Quickoffice is the way.  Save it to your Dropbox and you’ll instantly have it on your home / office computer when you turn it on next.

Twitter – The official app for the Twitter network.  I’m fairly new to Twitter but already seen the power of it.  It’s not just social irrelevant posts – it allows you to build you own Personal Learning Network.  More about Twitter in a future post.  In the meantime if you wish to follow me on Twitter I’m @TheNewHead. (Free)

Boxcar – An app that allows you to be notified of Tweets (and posts on a variety of other social networking sites such as Facebook etc) that contain your user name, tags etc.  Although free, unless you pay the £2.99 purchase price, you will have adverts working their way into your notifications.

Skype – We all know about Skype – free long distance calls.  Also great for those times when reception is poor but you have a wireless network.  Currently you can also get voice calls over your 3G network at no extra cost.  Develop those links with foreign schools and then use Skype to keep in touch. (Free)

Reeder – A RSS reader.  Simple, elegant and without any bells and whistles.  This software just works how you want it to.  It shows you your feeds, unread items and starred items.  It syncs with Google Reader so that you can access you feeds on most other RSS Readers whilst still keeping everything in sync.

Pocket Informant – My most used app.  This great diary that syncs with Google Calendar and allows you to have shared calendars with your partner, other teachers etc.  So much more powerful than the Calendar included with the iPhone.  It also has a built in To-Do manager if you don’t want to use a separate app.

Memiary – A great simple app that simply lets you record 5 successes each day.  When times are tough flip back through the days to see your past achievements.  This syncs with the Internet version as well.  Although great for teachers it’s also great for the children -in the last 15 minutes of each day get the children to tell you 5 things they have learnt. (Free)

1password – Syncs to desktop (Mac and Windows) version of the 1password software.  A password / account manager that allows you to have complicated passwords that really can’t be guessed.  All you need to remember is the Master password – don’t skimp on this password!

CoPilot – A navigation app – As much as I like to think I’m good with directions sometimes finding that school for a meeting just seems impossible.  Install Co-Pilot and you have instant directions.  There are other cheaper (and more expensive) navigation apps out there but I think CoPilot is the most polished.

Omnifocus – A fantastic GTD To-Do list App.  Syncs with Omnifocus on the Mac which I use all the time.  Beautiful software that works naturally.  Download the Mac trial at www.omnigroup.com and have a play.  It does take some learning but once learnt is so powerful.

Evernote – What would I do without Evernote? Find something you want to remember – Evernote it.  I don’t think it will be long till Evernote becomes a verb!  I now scan in and add any files relevant to courses that I attend.  Prior to Evernote I was never quite sure what happened to all my course notes! (Free)

Guardian – By far the best free newspaper app (if you like the Guardian!).  What’s great about the Guardian App is that you can drill down to exactly what you need – in my case Education news relevant to Primary Schools.  Get it quick as I’ve a sneaking suspicion that it’s going to be a paid app very soon! (Free)

Instapaper – A quick bookmark that allows you to remember webpages and their content.  Great when you just want to remember a tweet on Twitter or a webpage. Works in a similar way to Evernote but not quite as advanced. (Free)

All of the Apps mentioned above are available in the UK iTunes store at time of post.

What else have I missed out that you use on a daily basis?
